Started off the morning have breakfast overlooking the valley from our hotel patio. Beautiful spot on the map for sure.
The second set of churches are thought to have been carved out first. They were a bit more rustic and less structured as the ones the day before.
To get from one church to another church area you walk through "symbol of hell" tunnel. No lights allowed - you must experience the dark. It is a LONG trek.
Got them all in and then the trek back down to the airport - besides the military check points, the driver needs to navigate people, goats, cows, oxen and some memorable potholes. The churches live within a very active community.
We split the churches in to two trips. One afternoon trip and again the following morning.
It was a hiking adventure within an amazing tour of something that is truly hard to explain until you are in it. It was up and down, nothing even and lots of 900 old steps of just worn crevices to use as steps in the stone. Got my exercise.
