Dusseldorf Germany - just like every other suburb?

Arrived in Dusseldorf for a quick stop on my way to Amsterdam.
This stop was put together at the last minute before I left and I wasn't paying much attention to where I was landing.  I have a preference for staying in the center city area so I can get out and walk and enjoy the sites a city has to offer - never found a hotel along a highway that appealing but often have found them convenient.
Anyhow, I am at a great hotel with a pool that I took full advantage of.  And I am sitting on the outdoor patio enjoying a bbq dinner and listening to four American women whine about the wait staff not speaking English in Germany - gotta love it.  But the "love" Germany.
The funny part is as I look around it looks like I could be sitting in the suburban Twin Cities or any other American suburb - probably why they didn't understand her language issue.  Probably would have been more understanding if she spoke Spanish......
Hopefully, I get some time before my flight out to wander the 2 miles along the river to the Old Town Area of the City.
